Alaska

The Alaskan wilderness is a strange place – absolutely gigantic, strikingly beautiful in a stark, graphic kind of way, and perpetually lit (the sun doesn’t even start thinking about going down until at least 10pm). The kind of place that makes you feel like the most insignificant speck in the universe.

Here’s a few pictures I snapped along the way on our journey from the Denali Highway down to the Kenai Peninsula.

Fan Fixion

Finally filling the ‘indie-cowboy-covers-supergroup’ hole that’s been glaringly present in the Sydney live music scene for some time, Fan Fixion took to the FBi Social stage for the first time last Thursday night for a short, but blistering set.

With the impressive Singstar-honed vocal chords of FBi 94.5FM presenter Shag, along with Red Riders frontman Al Grigg, Flying Foxes‘ Benjamin Maher, Magnetic Heads‘ Des Miller and Peppercorn‘s Luke de Zilva, the band cranked their way through an all-killer, no-filler set that included ‘Evil’ (Interpol), ‘Float On’ (Modest Mouse), ‘A-Punk’ (Vampire Weekend), ‘Something So Strong’ (Crowded House) featuring FBi presenter Emma Swift on vocals, and one of my favourite songs of all time, ‘Under The Milky Way’ (The Church).

Check out a few videos from the night, courtesy of Pedestrian TV.

Here are a few snaps:

Kings Cross Hotel launch

The Kings Cross Hotel re-launched itself hard last Friday night, with a host of bands & DJs playing for free. I spent most of my time up at the new FBi Social venue on level 2, checking out The Laurels, Belles Will Ring and Dappled Cities.

FBi 94.5‘s new music venue FBi Social up on Level 2 of the freshly-relaunched Kings Cross Hotel has been fitted out especially for the station by interior designer Matt Woods (Bloodwood & Avido). Here’s a few shots of the space, sans people/booze/insanity.

Last week I volunteered to snap photos for FBi 94.5FM at the SMAC (Sydney Music Arts & Culture) Awards, held at the National Art School in Darlinghurst. The brief was to capture the live performances, but I ended up shooting most of the actual awards as well. Here are a few of the winners, and some of the bands & performers who took the stage.

Levins & Nina Las Vegas

Hana Shimada and Jimmy Sing from Goodgod Small Club

Ozi Batla

Despite missing out on a photo pass for this show, I still ended up in a great spot down the front where I shot this video during their performance of “Rill Rill” on my iPhone (using the 8mm app).
